What is a virus? Viruses are simple but often surrounded by much hype and misinformation. Many people want you to believe you must be an expert to understand viruses...but this just is not the case. Viruses are nothing but programs written to create copies of themselves and to attach these copies to other programs which are then considered to be infected by the virus.

These infected programs can be files containing executable code such as .COM and .EXE files, or boot sectors. A virus can only infect your PC if you execute an infected program or by booting from a diskette containing an infected boot sector. Simple right? Well, it should be simple, but there is a lot of myth and misinformation regarding viruses so things often appear to be not so simple. These myths are harmful to you if you believe them.

Hoax (myths) virus warnings are typically alerts started by malicious people and passed on by innocent users who think they are helping the community by spreading this warning. DO NOT forward hoaz warnings!  E-mail systems have literally collapsed after dozens of users forwarded a false alert. Corporations will know of a virus way before you do and will solve the problem at the gate. End users must not ever forward virus alarms.  Leave that to the IT Professionals. Besides it's not the job of an end user anyway. If such a message is received, end users should forward it to the IT department but not to anyone else. If you're not affiliated with a company and receive a virus warning, DO NOT forward the message to your friends.  Instead click on the link below for reporting a new virus. Remember, if it's a real virus, you don't want to spread it by telling everyone.  If it's a hoax, you're only doing what the malicious person wants when you forward a message to everyone else. REMEMBER, the virus stops here, real or fake.

If you believe you have a virus, follow the steps below.

  • Run your anti-virus program before you do any thing else. Check below for free anti-virus software found on the web.
  • Do not run any programs on your computer that you do not already have open.  If it's open and you received a virus, it's either already infected are it can't get infected by simply using it. In other words, you can still save the information, or just stop using it while you check your system out.
  • Check here for Hoax information and here for known viruses. Do not send email out telling everyone about something you probably know nothing about.  Let the professionals do that!!!
