Affenpinscher Description

Description written by: Karen Kennedy

The Affenpinscher is a small dog that has a monkey-like expression with a grand little mustache, bushy eyebrows, and hair tufts.  He must be balanced and compact, standing ideally at ten inches at the withers.  The head should not be too large, but in proportion to it's body.  The eyes are full and round, and should not be bulging.  The bite should be undershot, with teeth and tongue not visible when their mouth is closed.  Affenpinschers color varies greatly and is usually black, gray, silver, black and tan, and even red.  Furnishings are often lighter than coat and black masks are common also.  Their coat should be dense and rough, and about an inch in length.  Average adult weight is 7 to 8 pounds from a birth weight of about 3 to 5 ounces.

Affenpinschers have more than just a monkey like appearance; they act like one too with older children and adults.  When smaller infants are around, it's best to supervise the activity.  Affens have very delicate legs, to there should be no rough play with them, especially where they might have to land on their feet from more than a few feet above the ground.  The Affens are game and fearless little tykes who are never afraid to protect themselves or the family with whom they bond.  Affens make great alarm dogs and thrive on indoor life very well.

  • Class: Toy

  • Country of Origin: Germany

  • Size: Shoulder height: 9.50 - 11.50 inches

  • Coat: Coarse, growing in swirls. Can be brown or grey, but is generally black

  • Character: Affenpinschers are friendly, loyal, intelligent, lively, and very alert.

  • Temperament: Affenpinschers get along fine with children, but should be supervised with infants. Great with other Affenpinschers, and other types of household pets. They may become alarmed by strangers

  • Care: Grooming entails some stripping, or plucking, which must begin at a young age. Hair should never be clipped, as it ruins the coat. Coat may need to be plucked periodically by a professional dog groomer or breeder walking you through the grooming process a few times until you can do it yourself.

  • Training: Training must be consistent. This dog learns commands fairly quickly.

  • Activity: This breed needs supervised exercise. Regular playtime keeps Affenpinschers happy. Be careful with the type of activity due to the Affenpinschers petite size and bold nature which may cause broken bones.
