The
true canine gladiator, the American Pit Bull Terrier is a medium
sized dog who weight in at 35 to 60 pounds with females weighting 30
to 50 pounds. The head is medium length and wedge like; it is flat
and widest at the ears and the cheeks are prominent. The
muzzle is square, wide and deep with well pronounced jaws.
Ears are cropped or uncropped and set high on head; eyes round; neck
slightly arched and muscular. The shoulders are strong with
wide sloping blades; back is short and strong, slightly arched at
loins. The chest is deep but not too broad; tail shortest and
tapering to a point. The legs are large and round boned and
hocks down and straight. All colors are possible and the coat
is short and stiff to the touch.
The Pit Bull Terrier is
a good family dog and if raised with children literally thrives on
the beating toddlers give him, exhibiting far more tolerance than
most breeds. The dog must be kept on leash when in
public since he loves to spar with other dogs, consistent with his
terrier fighting dog back ground. If you are brash and
irresponsible, this is not the breed for you, as the Pit Bull
requires an educated, sensible person as his owner. About 40
percent of the dogs are aggressive towards cats and other animals,
also consistent with their baiting ancestors. These dogs
exhibit rock steady dispositions, love people more than anything,
and are athletes par excellence. They are a little soft to
correction and can be a trifle stubborn. They love to be
indoors and enjoy relaxing as much as a good physical workout.
