The
Australian Cattle Dog is a true working dog, that suggests strength,
agility and endurance in a compact and well constructed package. The
head is broad of skull, slightly curving between the ears; the
cheeks are muscular but not overdone; foreface is developed and
filled in under the eyes. The eyes are oval in shape and not
prominent or sunken in. Ears are moderately sized; small ears
are preferable to large ears. The neck is exceptionally
muscular with no appearance of throatiness. The top line is
level, back strong, rump long and sloping, chest deep with well
sprung ribs. Tail is set on low and medium in size. Coat
is straight and medium in texture with a short dense
undercoat. The Cattle Dog is either blue or red speckle in
color; black, tan, red or blue markings on the head are desirable
but never on the body. In blues, tan undercoat
permissible. Height is from 17 inches to 20 inches.
Australian Cattle Dogs
are good protectors of family and property and are a real
outdoorsman, who is not ideal for indoor living. Owners need
to be strong and decisive as he is a strong wiled smarter than your
average cow-herder cow-herder. Training from a young age is
necessary. Despite rumors of being wild and savage, the breed
is sound and protective. These are super adaptive and
versatile dogs who give lots of satisfaction to their family
members; they enjoy time with the family working, playing and
resting. They generally prefer to be the family's one dog.
