Australian Shepherd - Breed Information and Breeder Listings

Description written by: Judy Neely of Neely Ranch The Australian Shepherd is a medium size dog. A part of the herding breed, it is a very versatile animal. Intelligent and willing to please, the Aussie makes one of the greatest family pets bar none. Aussies are used in herding stock of course, but they excel in obedience, agility, tracking and other activities. They are a great first dog for a child and a 4-H project. They are easy to train because they are so smart. Aussies come in four basic color patterns - Blue Merle is the most common and most popular color; Black tri is a basically black dog with white collar on the neck and blaze on the forehead with copper accent markings on the checks, legs and above the eyes; Red tri is similar to the black only with red foundation coloring; Red merle is the fourth basic color similar to the blue merle but with a reddish foundation coloring swirled in a light red mixture. The origin of the Australian Shepherd is not known for certain. However, pictures from the late 1800's including Aussies show that they have existed for quite some time. They are thought to have originated with the Basques is Europe who immigrated to Australia in the 1800's and to the United States. In the nineteenth century when a lot of sheep came to the USA from Australia, the shepherds came along. Those dogs resemble very much the present day Australian Shepherd. Below are examples of the four basic colors of the Aussie:
	Auggie of Neely Ranch, a very gentle blue merle male, who has been used in TV commercials by Purina.		Ginger of Neely Ranch, a red merle female who is very sweet.
	Bishop of Neely Ranch, a black tri male who looks tough but is a very gentle fellow.		Pepper of Neely Ranch, a red tri female who has gorgeous deep liver red coloring.
