The
beautiful and smart Basenji dog is short backed and lightly built,
distinct for his wrinkled brow and tightly curled tail, not to
mention his bark-less-ness. The head is elegant, intelligent
in expression and carried proudly on a well arched, well crested
neck. The eyes are almond shaped and set obliquely with dark
rims. The ears are small and erect and slightly hooded.
The skull is flat and the foreface tapers from eye to muzzle with a
visible stop. The short back is balanced by a short coupled
body which appears to end in a waist. Chest of medium width
and tail is set high and curls over the side. The coat is
short and fine, and skin is pliant. The Basenji dog has white
feet, chest and tail tip, and the body is either chestnut red, pure
black, black and chestnut red, or brindle.
The Basenji is quick of mind and foot. Keeping
up with this little dog turns into a full time job, but worth every
moment. The Basenji offers high intelligence and much
affection, though he is aloof with strangers as a rule.
Training is tricky and patience has never been a truer virtue.
They are anxious and spirited, easily bored, and cleaner than most
cats, grooming themselves regularly. Many even climb like
cats, including on fences and trees. Approach the Basenji
slowly and treat him with respect, for he is a sensitive soul.
Due to their bark-less-ness, Basenjis do not make good watchdogs.
