The
variety designation, Tervuren, owes its name to the Belgian village of
Tervuren. The Tervuren was recreated after nearly being destroyed during World
War I. The breed was preserved by breeding the longhaired puppies in Malinois litters and
the fawn-grey puppies in the Groenendael litters. The first Tervuren was registered with
the AKC in 1918.
Prior to 1959, the Belgian Tervuren were registered and shown as
Belgian Sheepdogs. In that year the AKC granted the separate breed
classification designating the Belgian Tervuren as a distinct breed.
The Belgian Tervuren breed is extremely versatile. They can be taught many things
because their goal in life is to please their owners. They want to be with you and do not
do well in kennel or constant backyard situations. They will follow you about the house
relaxing when you do. Adult Tervuren range in weight from 45lbs to 65lbs
Height is 21 to 26 inches at the shoulders. Coloring can range from fawn to
mahogany with varying amounts of black overlay.
