The
Bernese Mountain Dog with it's strikingly aristocratic and tricolor
pattern, is a Swiss working dog that stands up to 27 1/2 inches tall
while females heights are about 1 inch less. The coat is
thick, moderately long, slightly wavy or straight; it is not trimmed
but shown natural; overly curly or dull coats are discouraged.
The head is flat skulled on top and broad with a defined but
unexaggerated stop. The ears are medium size, set high and
triangularly shaped with rounded tips. The eyes are somewhat
oval in shape. The Bernese Mountain Dog is a dry mouthed
breed, with little development of the flews. The topline is
level; the chest is deep with well sprung, not barrel shaped, ribs;
the back is broad and firm. The bushy tail may swirl upward
when the dog is alert, but never curl in spitz fashion. The
shoulders are moderately laid back and never loose; the forelegs are
straight, well under the shoulder. The hocks are well let down
and straight. The tricolor pattern consists of a jet black
ground color without exception, with symmetrical markings in rich
rust and clear white.
The Bernese Mountain
Dog, also known as the Berner, is a good natured dog who is not as
outgoing as some believe. Many liken him to the Golden
Retriever in temperament though he was not bred to be quite so
people happy. He is independent yet affectionate with his
people, generally aloof to strangers. He is an outdoorsman and
prefers to spend time outside. The Berner seems to not be able
to resist the attention of children. His faithfulness is most
noteworthy and he has a healthy "enjoy-life"
attitude. For more information and pictures of this wonderful
