Hardly
one's idea of a Powderpuff of a breed, the Chinese Crested can be
hairless or coated (called Powderpuff). The Hairless variety
only has hair on the head, tail and feet; the Powerpuff is
completely covered with a double soft and silky coat. This
little toy dog stands from 11 to 13 inches, with some variation
tolerated. The head is wedge shaped viewed from above, with
almond shaped eyes, set wide apart, large uncropped ears held erect,
clean cheeks, slight stop, and solid pigmented nose. The
Hairless should not be faulted for the absense of full dentition;
the Powderpuff is faulted for missing teeth. Neck is lean and
slightly arched; topline level; flanks moderately tucked up; loin
light, breastbone not prominent. The slender tail tapers to a
curve, reaching the hock, and carried gaily in motion.
Forequarters allow for good reach; moderate stifle angulation.
In the Hairless, the skin is smooth and soft. All colors are
permissible and the Crested enjoys some unusual doggie colors,
including pink, blue, lavender and copper.
A dog without
hair!!!! Chinese Cresteds, believe it or not, are more normal
than many breeds of dogs. Despite their unusual look, these
dogs tend to be playful, affectionate and hardy. Owners must
be aware that their near naked charges must be handled properly and
sometimes dressed properly too. During the fashionable winter,
sweaters and vest are a must for the well dressed Crested. The
breed belongs indoors and loves family and tolerates good
children. They are independent and very intelligent.
