Pointer Description

Description written by: Ann Gaynor Zapun

The Pointer (sometimes called English Pointer) is an all around dog who makes a good family pet while still retaining a strong hunting instinct. Today, Pointers are used not only for companionship and personal hunting, but compete in the show ring, field events, obedience, and agility.

History

The Pointer may have originated in Spain and/or Portugal, although records are unclear, and was known as the Spanish Pointer.  One of the oldest sporting type dogs, they are recorded in 16th century European paintings and perhaps earlier as well. When Italian Pointers were introduced into England in the beginning of the 18th century, they were crossed with the Spanish Pointer, producing today's Pointer. In the United States, Pointers have been traced to the Civil War era, when they were imported from Europe. It has been noted that Foxhound, Greyhound and perhaps Bloodhound and Bull Terrier were part of the origins of the modern day Pointer.

Physical Description

Well-balanced Pointers, working in the fields, are a sight to behold as they gracefully and efficiently cover ground. A medium to large sized breed, dogs measure 25" to 28" at the shoulders and weigh 55-75 pounds; bitches are 23" to 26" and weigh 45 to 65 pounds. Colors may be black, liver, orange or lemon either solid or in combination with white. All colors can include "ticking" (small speckles), either light or heavy, on the white areas of the coat.  It is important to remember that there is no bad color for a Pointer.

Temperament/Behavior Characteristics

Pointers are bred to work alongside their human companions. They consider themselves part of the family, enjoying equally their work in the field and the comforts of home life. They are affectionate and loyal, with a dignified demeanor. Having an even disposition, and eager to please, they are easy to house-train, and get along well with children and other dogs, but can be reserved with people they don't know. Being quite sensitive, Pointers should be trained with kindness, using only gentle and consistent, positive methods. Early socialization is very important, and ensures that they will readily accept new people and situations. While Pointers are not bred to be guard dogs, they can be protective to the extent of barking and standing their ground when unfamiliar people or animals enter their home or space.

Housing/Exercise Requirements

While calm and settled in the house, Pointers need and love regular exercise off-lead. Additionally, they make great jogging companions. Some Pointers are good swimmers. A high, fenced yard is very useful, but is not a substitute for ongoing exercise. After a good run, they are perfectly happy curled up in front of a fire, and quickly take to a place of their own, whether it be an open crate or soft (dog or people) bed.

Health and Grooming

The Pointer has fewer inherited problems than many of the more popular breeds. It is a good idea to get a puppy from parents who have been x-rayed to minimize the chances for hip dysphasia. Skin sensitivities, allergies, or under bites may be found; also a tendency towards timidity and shyness. Seizures or thyroid problems may be found in certain lines. Pointers have short coats, and a weekly brushing with a currycomb or similar tool controls shedding; they are, by nature, very clean. Routine cleaning of teeth and nail clipping completes the job. Bathing is only infrequently needed, depending upon the type of activity engaged in.
