This
beautiful dog is known as the Apollo of dogs for his great size, the
Great Dane stands 32 inches tall with the females about 2 inches
less; the male must not stand less than 30 inches, the female not
less than 28 inches. Provided the dog is well proportioned and
maintains the Dane breed type, taller is favored. The Dane's
head is rectangular, long and finely chiseled with a strongly pronounced
stop. Eyes are medium is size and deep set; ears set high,
medium in size, cropped or natural. The neck is firm and well
arched; withers slope into a short, level back; fore chest well
developed; chest deep and broad; brisket extends to elbow; tail set
high and tapering to hock joint. Quarters facilitate good
reach and drive. The coat is short,
thick and glossy. The Great Dane can be brindle, fawn with
black mask, blue, black or
harlequin, white with black torn patches.
Danes are big dogs,
really big dogs but are surprisingly gentle and nimble. Most
owners say that Danes even do well in apartments. Thankfully
he is even tempered and not aggressive, though with professional
handling can be trained for protection work. He is also very
sweet and truly adores children. Danes are essentially happy
and easygoing.
Newborn Danes range
between 12 and 24 ounces. Weaning is common by five to six
weeks. By eight weeks, a weight of 20 to 25 pounds is to be
expected. Great Danes experience a rapid growth period from
four to about ten months of age.
