The
Mastiff is one of the oldest families of dogs, belonging to the
hound breed. It is the largest and most muscular dog known and
is prized for its courage and power, inherited from bulldog
ancestors, and for it ability to watch and guard premises and
persons, the latter a strongly marked instinct. He is a noble
looking animal, with a strong, massive head, hanging ears and deep,
overlapping lips. The coat is short, of a light or dark fawn
color, or apricot, except the ears, muzzle and nose, which are
black. Minimal white on chest is permitted. The height of the
shoulders is from 25 to 30 inches. The coat is double with the
outer coat coarse and
medium short, with the undercoat being short and close lying.
Despite its savage
appearance, the mastiff is gentle and docile, and makes a desirable
pet for children. He is a
true giant with a proportionately sized heart. For the family
who has the room and lifestyle to accommodate such a big dog, the
Mastiff makes a great choice, as he loves people and adapts to a variety
of living situations. He does not thrive on a totally outdoor
living style. Some Mastiffs actually survive in apartments and
condominiums. Mastiffs have large appetites and require a
strong, gentle handler and trainer. Mastiff's are a little
slow in learning, but be persistent, and they will learn just fine.
