Rottweiler Description

Description written by: Karen Kennedy

The Rottweiler is believed to be descended from the most ancient of breeds. His origin is from the Roman times, in which era he performed the duties of guard and drover dog. When the Roman Legions traversed the Alps, the dogs accompanied them protecting the soldiers and driving the herds. Settling in the area of Rottweil, the Roman Army dogs came into contact with dogs native to the area. The natural result was an interbreeding of the two.  The principle duties of these interbreds remained the guarding and driving of large herds, the defense of their masters and the master's property. Since there was a large concentration of the dogs in the vicinity of the Old German Empire City of Rottweil, the dog acquired the name: ROTTWEILER, "butcher dog."  The butchers bred this type of dog solely for their working ability and their personal use. With the passage of time, an outstanding guarding and drover dog, as well as cart dog, was the result.

Not a huge dog, the Rottweiler is a medium-large compact dog noted for his solid black flat-lying coat with clearly defined rust marks.  He is known for his strength and agility and stands 24 to 27 inches tall, with bitches about 2 inches less.  His head is broad between the ears and of medium length; in profile, forehead moderately arched with well developed stop and good bony ridges to eyes.  Ears are pendant and triangular, well set apart.  Muzzle is broad at base and tapering with well developed chin and broad black nose.

The well bred Rottie is a gentle, family loving animal and a natural guard dog.  Temperaments vary, some are independent, aloof and less friendly while other are outgoing and sociable with everyone.

  • Activity: Rotties need plenty of exercise and room to play. Let them run in a field or take them jogging with you, or you can let them run in the woods as she will not wander far from her family. Rottweilers also love the lakes and a dip in the ocean if available to show off their swimming skills I presume.  Just don't say lake and don't take them there!!!
