Afghans are the comedian of the
sighthounds and if you like cats you most likely will enjoy Afghans.
These wonderful dogs are a very old breed originally coming from Afghanistan
a rough harsh country where they were used for hunting.
Hard to imagine it when you see all the coat they have today, but
the old pictures show they were much less hairy, patterned with
shorter hair around feet and legs, and smaller in size. The afghan
hound is slower speed wise than some of the other sighthounds. Since
their original country was so rugged they are much more adapted for
jumping and climbing and leaping than running flat out with speed.
Afghans are also free
thinkers which makes them rather a challenge to live with. However
in the years I have lived with them - they are devoted, loyal and
maintain a independence. I have put obedience titles and coursing
titles on my afghans, and now that racing has opened up for breeds
other than whippets this is my main focus.
